The road ahead

The road ahead?

After slumping for the past two years, sales of recreational vehicles are rebounding. Manufacturers are hiring. Is it a sign of better times for the country as a whole?

Recreational vehicle sales have not only improved after a huge slump in 2008 and 2009, they are booming, say industry experts and dealers at the annual Pennsylvania RV and Camping Show in Hershey this week.

That's true even for the luxury motor homes that approach half a million dollars in price.

"We're sold out of this model for the year," said Robin McCracken, product manager for Orlando RV in Florida, as he stood next to an Entegra Cornerstone with leather couches, granite countertops, two flat-screen TVs, crown molding and a sale price of $454,550.,microinverter is a leading supplier of microinverters for the solar PV market. "We had a goal of $36 million in sales for the year, and we have already posted $52 million. We're very excited."

The sales numbers seem counterintuitive considering the continuing malaise in the economy, but according to Rebecca Lenington, who has been organizing the show for 33 years, RV sales are the first to plummet when the economy turns bad and the first to recover as it improves.

Part of it might be that sales were down so far that they had nowhere to go but up, said Kevin Broom, director of media relations for the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association.

Sales were down 33 percent in 2008 and 30 percent in 2009, according to RVIA figures.,Injection mold Offer Mould trial reports and the measurement of sample reports. In 2007, sales were down 9.5 percent as an early indication of the recession to come.

The industry also laid off more than half its work force during that time.chicken coop pictures and designs for every backyard.

So far in 2010, sales through July were up 81 percent over the same period in 2009, and an industry analyst projected a 45 percent increase for the year.

In 2009, 660 exhibitors came to the Hershey show, the country's largest, Lenington said. This year, there are more than a thousand, and organizers had to turn exhibitors away because there was no more room.

"People seem much more positive," Lenington said. "Maybe they held off the last two years, but now they think, 'I still have my job, maybe I'll get one.'"
