Pleasanton or bust

Concord-based Xradia is the latest company to move its operations to the East Bay city region, joining several others that have done so over the last several months. Xradia expects to vacate its Concord headquarters and manufacturing facilities and shift them to Pleasanton in mid-October. The company makes X-ray imaging products and systems.

"We are growing and we are trying to get more reach into Silicon Valley in terms of personnel resources, welcome to buy fluorescent bulbs." Rod Browning, Xradia's chief executive officer, said Monday. "The company is growing. We need to hire more engineers, technical staff, marketing staff."

Xradia agreed to rent 37,000 square feet in Pleasanton at 4385 Hopyard Road, according to realty brokers from Colliers International and Cornish & Carey Commercial. The lease will nearly double the space that Xradia now occupies in Concord, the brokers said. Our knowledge of products covers auto/led downlight.

That's far from the only deal in less than a year when looking at Pleasanton asw ell as the other two cities in the Tri-Valley region, Dublin and Livermore. Relocations into the Tri-Valley by companies that are moving from other parts of the Bay Area will bring nearly 600 jobs to the region once the corporate shifts are complete.

"It's getting to be like Silicon Valley East here," said Sheryl Hall, a public relations specialist with Callidus Software,Welcome to obodio.com. Pleasanton from San Jose. "You have a nice tech flavor here."

The Callidus relocation brought 120 jobs to the region.

"There are a lot of compelling reasons for companies to move to the Tri-Valley and Pleasanton," said Pamela Ott, Pleasanton's economic development director. "You have the infrastructure, the highways, transit, a great location, and low rents."

And it's more than high-tech companies that are moving in. A financial giant has joined the ranks.

Patelco Credit Union recently announced that it intends to move its headquarters from San Francisco to Pleasanton. Over the summer, lighting company Bridgelux moved its headquarters and manufacturing operations, along with 150 workers, to Livermore, departing Sunnyvale.

"Everybody is happy here, and it's a lot more space than we had," said Brian Fisher, director of corporate marketing with Bridgelux, an LED light maker. "We are able to ramp up our manufacturing operations and meet our objectives here."

The ability to expand played a big role in the moves by Xradia and other recent arrivals.

"Xradia was bursting at the seams in several locations in north Concord," said Michael Carrig, a vice president and broker with Colliers. "They will have their headquarters, research and development, and a customer show area. It's a pretty high-tech facility."

Local officials are also encouraged that the relocations to the area are coming from an array of exit points.

"Companies are coming here from the South Bay, the Peninsula and San Francisco," said Linda Maurer, Dublin's economic development director. "And it's more than one specific type of user. It's an array of companies."

Some Dublin companies such as Taleo Corp. and Fluor Corp. have begun working with city officials to expand their existing operations in town, Maurer said.

Other area firms such as Workday and Polycom have disclosed plans to add staff locally.

The rising presence of tech firms is noticeable even to companies that were used to being in Silicon Valley.

"You don't feel like you're in the backwoods somewhere," Hall, the Callidus representative, said. "You have companies like Workday, Taleo, Oracle and Polycom that area here. They know you and you what you're doing."
