Flea market now in 9th year

Visitors can expect a full house of antique dealers at the Ralston Creek Fair and Flea Market this Labor Day,,installer of granite countertops and marble Vanity tops. said Bill Ackerman of Iowa City, who helped to organize the event.

In its ninth year, the flea market is moving to a new location, four blocks south of the Johnson County Courthouse between Clinton and Dubuque streets. Ackerman said the upgraded location has drawn an increased interest from dealers.

Between 30 and 35 antique dealers are expected to show up, selling everything from furniture and glassware to linens, quilts and vintage jewelry.

The flea market began nearly a decade ago as a way to educate the public about Uptown Bill's Coffee Shop, an enterprise run by adults with disabilities.

In its early years, the event drew a couple hundred people, but more recent crowds have numbered more than 1,000, Ackerman said, and some of them are serious about their antiques.

"It has just kept growing," he said. "Even though it opens at 8 a.China glassware catalog and Glassware manufacturer directory.m., the earliest people normally arrive about 5 a.m."

This year's flea market also is an opportunity for Uptown Bill's to show off its new location at 730 S. Dubuque St. The coffee house moved from Gilbert Street just two weeks ago.

Tom Gilsenan, director of Uptown Bill's, said it's like a big welcome party for the coffee house.,I've reviewed and rated dozens of lose weight fast and fitness programs.

"Everywhere I go I hear people who say, 'I'll see you Monday,'" Gilsenan said. "It's like a new chapter in the whole Uptown Bill's story. It's a new place and new possibilities in a new neighborhood."

In addition to antique vendors, there also will be food available from the Soup Kitchen restaurant and the Sugar Shack. A number of musicians will play throughout the day.

Ackerman said the event is not meant to make money, although any proceeds will be donated to Uptown Bill's. Instead, it's a way to bring the community together.,Piles are another disease that is basically found in the lower rectum.

"It has become an Iowa City tradition," Ackerman said. "It's a festive day. Dealers look forward to it year after year."

Through all of his years working with the flea market, Ackerman said there are two accomplishments that stand out.

"Number one, we've drawn more awareness of Uptown Bill's," he said. "Number two, you know you wonder every time we hold this whether people will show up, and you end up having 1,000 people come through the door. You feel good about that."
