Kevin Keith clemency decision due tomorrow
Attorneys for condemned inmate Kevin Keith say the evidence is overwhelming he is innocent of killing three people in a 1994 shooting that wounded three others, including two children. The state says the evidence is just as strong that Keith was the man responsible. The Ohio Parole Board planned to recommend Thursday whether Gov. Ted Strickland should show Keith mercy. On the evening of Feb. 13, 1994, police say Keith entered an apartment in Bucyrus about 60 miles north of Columbus and sprayed it with gunfire, killing Marichell Chatman, 24; her 4-year-old daughter, Marchae; and the child's aunt, Linda Chatman, 39. Three others were wounded, including siblings Quanita Reeves, 7, and Quentin Reeves, 4. In 2007, attorneys researching Keith's case uncovered documents in which a man told an informant before the Feb. 13 slayings occurred that he had been paid $15,000 to cripple the informant responsible for the drug raids. The suspect's accomplice in a pharmacy burglary ring also told police that the suspect had been paid to kill the informant and threatened to kill anyone else who snitched against him.
In addition, family members of the suspect told Keith's attorney the suspect was involved in the Bucyrus killings, though they did not offer concrete evidence. The suspect also showed up at the hospital after the shootings and made sure police knew he had an alibi. He also told police he knew what kinds of bullets were used in the shooting.
The state says the alternate suspect was not implicated at the time by the informant and had no reason to seek revenge.
